Cross-Platform Development with PhoneGap

My first international talk. Building mobile apps with web technologies at a German tech incubator. The promise (and limitations) of hybrid mobile development.

Why this talk matters

2013 was the height of the "write once, run everywhere" dream for mobile. PhoneGap (later Apache Cordova) was the leading solution for building iOS and Android apps with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

This was my first talk delivered outside Romania, at netzinkubator in Germany. It covered the architecture of hybrid apps, the bridge between web views and native APIs, and practical patterns for building performant cross-platform UIs.

Looking back, the hybrid mobile wave was just the beginning. The same tension between native and cross-platform continues today with React Native and Flutter. The fundamental trade-offs I discussed in 2013 still apply.

Key takeaways

  • Cross-platform mobile development is always a trade-off between development speed and native experience quality.
  • The web view is both the strength and the weakness of hybrid apps. Understanding its limitations is more important than knowing its capabilities.
  • Plugin architecture matters. The quality of a hybrid app depends on the quality of its native bridges.

Delivering a technical talk in Germany as a Romanian developer in 2013 felt like a milestone. The netzinkubator audience was sharp and the Q&A pushed me to think more critically about the approach.
